EXPERTISE: Entry into the Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) degree program for participants in the Lakota Language Education Action Project (LLEAP) requires:

  • a contract signed by the student, the LLEAP Program Coordinator (who will be considered the student’s advisor for the purpose of the BLS), and the Associate Dean for Academics in the College of Arts & Sciences.
  • completion of 30 credit hours of coursework, including ENGL 101 and 210 and 3 credit hours of SPCM
  • a cumulative GPA of 2.5

BLS students participating in LLEAP complete all of the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Complete these courses, in addition to NATV 110 and 260 and 14 credit hours of LAKL as noted above, to fulfill the expectations of LLEAP.

* Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to co-register for EDFN 338 and ELED/SEED 296.

In addition, the following requirements must be fulfilled for completion of the Teacher Education Program and for eligibility for certification.

  • _____ Acceptance by the School of Education into the Teacher Education Program. Criteria for acceptance include:
    • Complete application for Teacher Education Program
    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.6
    • Successful completion of EDFN 338 and ELED/SEED 296
    • Passing score on PRAXIS I examination in Reading, Writing, and Math with a score of 172+
    • Interview with designated School of Education faculty member
    • Sophomore standing (ordinarily, completion of 32 credit hours)
  • _____Acceptance by the School of Education into Student Teaching and approval for subsequent graduation. Criteria include:
    • Passing score on PRAXIS II PLT examination
    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 in LAKL and NATV courses
    • Documented proficiency in Lakota language
  • _____ Satisfactory completion of full-year professional residency, including student teaching in two of the three levels (elementary, middle, and high school).
  • _____ Satisfactory completion of all other applicable requirements (electronic portfolio, etc.).
